I have never really "decorated" my own home for the 4th of July. I have gone to cookouts, parades, and many fireworks in celebration of our country's independence but have never had the urge to bust out the red, white, and blue everywhere...but for some reason this year I have become motivated to do a few crafts and I am almost overly excited about the 4th. We aren't doing anything out of the ordinary...a cookout with good friends (us and Lisa and Chase...most of our friends are out of town this long weekend) and likely will be going to the fireworks (if the boys make it). I have purchased sparklers for Henry and the snap pop thingies for him to throw and make noise. And I am excited to make an abundance of food for all (all 6 of us) to eat but other than that nothing too exciting. We will enjoy having Daddy home for three days and maybe just maybe I will get some weeding done but that is a different story all together.
I love crafting (I don't take the time to do it as often as I would like) and I love being able to make things with the boys especially when they are as excited to help! I get all kinds of emails and check many blogs of women who are constantly making things and being creative and I think I could do that...we should do that...but then it either gets put in an email folder or bookmarked for another day. Well not today...or should I say yesterday because that is when the crafting began...
I printed off templates for festive 4th of July Disney pinwheels and we quickly put them together. Henry was very excited but could barely make them moving by blowing...so he suggested that we try them outside...
Trying his hardest...
Even Charlie tried...
The first one I printed on card stock thinking it would last longer but then when it didn't spin very easily I decided to print the second one on regular paper...unfortunately even the NM wind couldn't get them moving very fast...but the boys still enjoyed carrying them around and they make very cute decor...
Even jumping didn't make them spin...
Today, we went to the library and heard stories about the 4th of July. Then, of course we made 4th of July crafts...keeping Momma in the spirit of things...
The boys made firecrackers and door hanging decorations.
The firecrackers were Charlie's favorite...
Two firecrackers...
Charlie's and Henry's (Henry made his with only a little help with the gluing) festive decorations...
Henry has been having a hard time understanding time like in weeks and months and miles away...for instance he knows that Gma has to get in a plane to get here (I know this because every time he sees a plane he asks if "maybe Gma is on it"?) but he also thinks that she could get in one at anytime and be here within minutes of leaving home...in an effort to keep my sanity (because literally EVERYDAY, many, MANY times a day he will ask) as well as help him understand we made two countdown chains today and in keeping with the theme they were red, white, and blue.
Chain #1 is quite short...after tonight it is only 6 links long and it will help us countdown the days until we leave for Albuquerque and meet Gma and Gpa. We decided to hang it in the hallway but later had to move it for a different project was better suited there. Its home now is on the boys' bedroom door.
Silly Momma got out the stool...
Proud that he (with a little help) hung his countdown chain...
The second countdown chain is much, much longer...it will help us countdown the days until Gma and Papa arrive. And since we aren't sure when Uncle Tim will be coming home (back to the states), we aren't sure when G&P will be here either...we have estimated 46 links (45 after tonight) putting them here the middle of August.
It reaches literally floor to ceiling.
After making the chains, it was suppose to be naptime BUT of course neither one was ready or willing...I found this super cute foot/handprint flag idea online (wish I could claim it as my own) and was willing to try it out but needed to run to Hobby Lobby for a canvas...Henry was ready to go and Charlie was searching for shoes (apparently they were both dieing to go to HL) so we piled into the car and off we went to Hobby Lobby.
I made a deal with Henry that we could start the project with his footprints and then it would be nap time for both while I painted the blue because it needed to dry...it worked. He loved making his footprints and actually went to take his nap without complaining...when Charlie woke up he did his handprints (under a little protest)...I loved the finished product and hung it in the hallway...might keep it there until Christmas!
Finally, I have a wreath on my door after whipping together this one right before dinner.
Happy 4th of July!
